Learning to Say “No”

24 Jan

Saying “no” can be hard, at least for me. I’m always worried that I’ll miss an opportunity or get behind. But for the past few days, I’ve said “no”.

This past weekend, I said “no” to working all weekend, and spent two days hanging out in New Jersey with my best friend. We relaxed, ate good food, talked late into the night, and watched trashy television.

I said “no” to twitter chats, Facebook groups, forums, my Google Reader, checking blog stats, and even blog posting.

Did my Klout score fall? Maybe. Checking Klout was another thing that I said “no” to. Did I miss a great twitter chat? Maybe. Did I miss something fabulous on one of my Facebook groups or forums? Maybe.

But did life go on? Absolutely. In fact, it was great. I took time to relax and veg out.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this isn’t some overly dramatic good-bye post. I’m not going anywhere! But I do think it’s important to take time to unplug every once in a while. You’ll come back relaxed, refreshed and ready to go.

What have you said “no” to lately? Did it make you feel relaxed or stressed?

I have this prob too! I’ve said “no” to doing other people’s job. I let them know what had to be done in verbal and written form and then I dropped it. I have not even checked back with them to see if they had done it! They are “in charge” this year, wanted it and wanted me to butt out – so I have. THe whole program can fall on it’s face – but hey I’m not “in charge” this year!!!

I’ve gotten a lot better about saying no to a lot of things, but I still need the reminder. Yesterday I took the day off work to spend with my husband, and I said no to everything else: no phone, no twitter, no facebook, no blogs, no work calls, no schedules. It was awesome and a great reminder that it’s good for me!

I think sometimes I need to take time off just to remind myself that the world won’t fall apart if I do! I’m glad you had a nice break!
